Recognizing Excellence Across the Indo-Pacific: USO Korea’s 52nd Six Star Salute Honors the Next Generation of Leaders

There is a distinct sense of pride in watching the next generation of leaders step forward, service members who carry forward the lessons of those before them while shaping the future of the force. That spirit took center stage at the United Service Organizations (USO) Korea’s 52nd Annual Six Star Salute Gala in Seoul.

The event brought together military leaders, diplomats, and community partners from across the region to recognize exceptional service members serving on the Korean Peninsula. Representing the United States, the Republic of Korea, and the United Nations Command, this year’s honorees reflect the strength of a multinational force operating across the Indo-Pacific.

First established in 1970, the Six Star Salute remains USO Korea’s premier recognition program. The title “Six Star” is an honorary distinction awarded to selected service members, symbolizing both their accomplishments and their potential as emerging leaders, and rooted in USO history. Chosen by their unit leadership, these individuals exemplify excellence, professionalism, and commitment to mission, qualities essential to maintaining readiness in one of the most strategically important regions in the world and ties back to the USO’s foundation originating from the six different service organizations that formed the USO under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s direction on February 4th, 1941.

An Experience That Goes Beyond Recognition

The Six Star Salute is designed to be more than a formal ceremony. Throughout the program, honorees engage in cultural experiences, connect with peers from different branches and allied forces, and gain valuable perspective from senior leaders. The culminating gala places honorees at the heart of the evening. Seated alongside senior military officials, ambassadors, and business leaders, each service member is formally recognized and presented with a medallion, marking their designation as a “Six Star” and acknowledging their role in the future of the force.

PFC Amieke Roberts, U.S. Army Six Star Honoree, shared:

“Being selected as a Six Star Honoree was truly meaningful. It was an honor to feel recognized for my contributions and supported by such a strong community. I’m grateful for the opportunity and for everyone who made this experience possible.”

Connecting Korea to the Indo-Pacific Mission

Service in Korea is deeply connected to the broader Indo-Pacific mission, one that demands agility, resilience, and strong partnerships among allied forces.

The Six Star Salute highlights the contributions of service members whose work supports not only operations on the peninsula, but also the collective security and stability of the Indo-Pacific. Their efforts strengthen alliances, reinforce deterrence, and ensure continued cooperation among partner nations.

As Scott Maskery, Regional Vice President, USO Indo-Pacific, explains:

“This event reflects the USO’s role across the Indo-Pacific by mirroring the same unity, commitment, and partnership shown by enlisted leaders serving in a complex, multinational environment. Just as the event honors emerging leaders from the U.S., Republic of Korea, and United Nations Command, the USO Indo-Pacific Region operates shoulder to shoulder with service members and allies across borders, fostering connection and resilience. It underscores the USO’s enduring mission to provide steadfast support to service members and their families, especially when they are serving far from home.”

A Symbol of the U.S.–ROK Alliance

At its core, the Six Star Salute represents more than recognition, it reflects the enduring partnership between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

By honoring service members from U.S., ROK, and United Nations Command forces, the event reinforces a shared commitment to regional security and highlights the collaboration that defines the alliance. It also provides a rare opportunity for service members to engage directly with senior leaders and community partners who support their mission.

The presence of respected Korean leaders, including retired senior military officials and community advocates, further highlights the strength of this relationship and the mutual respect that sustains it.

Community Support Behind the Mission

The success of the Six Star Salute is made possible through the collective efforts of USO staff, volunteers, and a dedicated network of partners from both American and Korean communities.

These partnerships play a critical role in delivering meaningful experiences for service members and ensuring continued support across the region. Their contributions help create an environment where service members feel welcomed, appreciated, and connected, even while stationed far from home.

Delivering Support Across the Region

While the gala is a highlight, it reflects a broader, year-round commitment to supporting service members and their families.

As Douglas Boltuc, Area Director, USO Korea, notes:

“The Six Star Salute is very important to our annual sponsors and longtime supporters, especially those who are unable to visit USO centers and lounges in Korea. This gala allows them to express their gratitude to our junior enlisted service members who protect freedom and democracy on a continual basis. Photos, stories, and videos from this event show our troops and their families that both countries of this alliance stand firmly behind them, thankful and supportive of the sacrifices and dedication they display.” From center operations to outreach efforts, the USO remains focused on strengthening morale, building connections, and enhancing quality of life across installations throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Brian Harris, President, USO Korea Advisory Council, shared:

“The USO Six Star Salute is where the U.S.–ROK Alliance is seen at its most human: service members, commanders, diplomats, and community leaders gathered around a shared standard of duty. To me, it represents the Advisory Council’s essential role, turning respect into practical support and ensuring the community stands visibly behind those who serve.”
